“I believe as the leadership team goes, so goes the rest of the company. So if you don't have that consistent and significant sustainable growth, you've got some work to do.” — Mike Goldman

1. Finding Alignment in Leadership Teams

  • Scott emphasizes alignment as the key characteristic of exceptional leadership teams.

  • When everyone shares the same vision and rows in the same direction, the potential for excellence becomes limitless.

  • Mike adds that many leaders think their teams are aligned — but true alignment requires listening to all voices on the team.

2. The Inspiration Behind The Frequency of Excellence

  • Scott’s inspiration came from Arthur Brooks’s book From Strength to Strength, which introduced the idea of the two curves of life:

    • The first curve focuses on success, achievement, and resume virtues.

    • The second curve centers on legacy, meaning, and eulogy virtues.

  • As Scott transitioned from his first to his second curve, he asked himself: What can I give back?

  • His book became a way to “squeeze the sponge” — sharing all the wisdom he absorbed throughout his career with others.

3. The Growth Mindset and “Tuning into Excellence”

  • The book’s central message: Excellence surrounds us — we just have to tune into the right frequency.

  • Using the metaphor of an old radio dial, Scott explains that excellence is like a frequency you must intentionally adjust to find.

  • With a growth mindset, we can constantly learn from every person and situation.

  • Mike connects this to his own experience of learning to see opportunity everywhere — even in situations that at first seem unhelpful.

4. Reflective Leadership

  • Scott defines reflective leadership as the practice of observing excellence and pausing to integrate those lessons.

  • His “leadership mosaic” is built from all the people who influenced him throughout his life.

  • The key: witness excellence → pause → reflect → encode it into memory → apply it later.

5. The B5 Framework

Scott introduces his B5 Framework — five guiding “Be” statements that help leaders tune into excellence:

  1. Be Intentional – Surround yourself with excellence; iron sharpens iron.

  2. Be Present – Truly listen; use the “new 80/20 rule” (listen 80%, speak 20%).

  3. Be Curious – Ask meaningful questions; curiosity is an underused superpower.

  4. Be Bold – Embrace failures; scars are reminders of lessons learned.

  5. Be Reflective – Pause to let lessons shift from short-term to long-term memory.

Mike reflects that this framework is a powerful daily practice for leaders and learners alike.

6. The Role of Mentorship

  • Scott credits his success to his mentors, describing mentorship as essential to career and personal growth.

  • There’s a mentorship gap today: 80% value mentorship, but only 37% have mentors.

  • Many expect formal arrangements, but the best mentorships happen organically.

  • His advice: seek out people you admire, build authentic relationships, and let mentorship evolve naturally.

7. Mentorship in the Modern, Hybrid World

  • Mike notes it’s harder today to build organic relationships due to remote work.

  • Scott agrees, saying in-person contact builds depth and trust — “pressing palms” matters.

  • Leaders should intentionally create space for connection and mentorship in hybrid environments.

8. Leaders as Mentors and Dual Frequency

  • As leaders grow, others start tuning into their frequency.

  • Leaders become force multipliers — their behavior amplifies across the organization, for better or worse.

  • Leaders should model curiosity, ethics, optimism, and care, because culture mirrors leadership.

9. Culture as the Shadow of Leadership

  • Drawing on his Navy experience, Scott explains that culture is a reflection — a shadow — of the leader.

  • Like a restaurant general manager’s mood shaping the staff’s energy, leaders set the tone for everyone.

  • Leaders must recognize their behavior ripples outward, multiplying effects across teams.

10. The Power of a Laughing Leader

  • Scott advocates for laughter and levity in leadership.

  • A workplace can be serious about results without taking itself too seriously.

  • Humor humanizes leaders, builds connection, and fuels morale.

  • As Mike adds, culture can’t be outsourced to HR — “The CEO owns the culture.”

11. Feed Forward vs. Feedback

  • Borrowing from Marshall Goldsmith, Scott teaches that feed forward outperforms feedback:

    • Feedback looks backward and often triggers defensiveness.

    • Feed Forward focuses on the future — it’s coaching, not critique.

  • Example: Instead of “You should have done X,” say, “Next time, let’s focus on X.”

  • Leadership is a muscle — the more you practice feed forward, the more natural it becomes.

12. Lifelong Mentorship for Senior Leaders

  • Even experienced leaders need mentors.

  • Scott encourages executives to model continuous learning: reference mentors, cite insights, and discuss growth openly.

  • This signals to others that mentorship and learning never end.

  • He reminds leaders: Don’t be SALLY (“Same As Last Year”). Keep evolving.

13. Embedding Excellence in Your Organization

  • Scott’s advice for leaders starting tomorrow:

    • Follow the B5 Framework.

    • Be intentional about who you spend time with.

    • Be curious and reflective about what you learn.

    • Lean into both success and failure as opportunities to grow.

14. How Scott Works with Clients

  • Scott now focuses on keynote speaking and training to inspire leaders and teams.

  • He also offers informal coaching and mentorship to those he connects with through his talks.

  • His book The Frequency of Excellence is available in print, Kindle, and audio (which he personally narrated).
